NELA's Inaugural Youth Summit

On October 13, 2018, NELA proudly presented its Inaugural Youth Summit at the beautiful Jessie Turner Center in Fontana, CA. The Youth Summit was a free community event for students in grades 8-12 that featured five Science in City © Learning Stations, a Poster Contest where students competed for cash prizes, a mini career day, where students had the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, and a keynote presentation by Brittney McKenzie, Ph.D. Candidate in Bioengineering at the University of California at Riverside.

Sponsors
included the City of Fontana, Southern California Edison, SoCalGas, Union Bank and Cadiz Inc. At the summit, students participated in two of five current Science in City© Learning Stations, each which included hands-on learning activities and demonstrations:
  1. Atmosphere/Weather (Instructor - Justo Ramirez): Students learned about the role atmosphere and weather plays in the air quality. Activities included a convection tube and soda can implosion demonstrations.
  2. Heat/Climate Change (Instructor - Francisco Dr. Francisco Dóñez, Ph.D.): Students were treated to a presentation about the science and social issues surrounding climate change. Activities included measuring the effects of climate change and identifying the effects of climate change on various object.
  3. Air Quality (Instructor - Giovanna Pozuelos Ph.D. Candidate): Students learned the basic science of air pollution. Activities included making smog in a bottle.
  4. Water Quality/ Resources (Instructor - Jose Villafuerte, Science Teacher): Students learned the basics of groundwater and contamination. Activities included building an aquifer model.
  5. Renewable Energy (Instructor – Clint Ward, Science Teacher): Students learned the basic principles of renewable energy. Activities included solar car races. This was particularly challenging due to the extreme weather event with no sun, but NELA volunteers were able to demonstrate the principles of solar energy by constructing a portable sunlight apparatus indoors.
